A BOSTON GLOBE EDITORIAL: Smoke-Free, Statewide
BOSTON GLOBE ^ | 5/11/2003 | EDITORIAL

BOSTON EXTENDED its ban on restaurant smoking to bars less than a week ago, and already the pressure is on the Legislature to do what it has never mustered the gumption to do: ban smoking in workplaces statewide.

Now lawmakers might finally take this step, both because Boston's brief experience has shown that night life does not end with a smoking ban and because some city bar owners want a level playing field to keep smoking pa trons from fleeing to cities that permit it in bars, such as Quincy. A state law would be a belated recognition that no Massachusetts worker should have to tolerate secondhand smoke - a risk factor in cancer and heart disease - as a condition of employment.

Jayson Blair was a smoker. The Globe wouldn't touch him.

For every diehard smoker who stays home rather than abstaining for a couple of hours, there are new patrons who have steered clear of places because of their smokiness.

Here are some more for ya.

One of the unexpected upsides about the smoking bad guys, is they help me understand hate. I hate the people that think that you can not go buy a restaurant, invite a few friends over and smoke a cigar. I hate people that think you can not start a business, hire workers and tell the smokers the break room is down the hall on the left.

These are good people to show your kids. You see Johnny, these are the people you hate. You ridicule them and scorn them and you laugh at their kids. You tell them that only stupid, state titty suckin little gay boys think that they have a right to clean air. Smart people know these people are dumb state titty sucking wimpy punks.

See Johnny, I love that these people exist cuz they help me to help you learn to hate.

The next thing is a ban on meat and laws to make everyone a strict vegetarian.

Sounds like our City Coucil, who still claims no adverse effect, but they are lying, proof of that...... they won't show the study proving their point, and we the taxpayer paid for that darn study, if what they said were true, they would have that study plastered in every newspaper, and on all tv stations.
